Black History Month- DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that Mathieu Da Costa was the first recorded black person to set foot on Canadian land? Like many black Africans from the 15th-17th century, Da Costa served as an interpreter for the European slave masters. Even though Mathieu was a free slave, he was kidnapped from the France by Dutch slave masters around the late 16th century. When Mathieu was brought to Canada in the early 17th century, he worked as a translator to many different colonies. It has been reported that Mathieu Da Costa spoke at least 5 different languages including: French, Dutch, Portuguese, English and Basque “pidgin”.

Have a wonderful Family Day weekend Lions!!
