1. Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a pioneering Black surgeon, performed one of the first successful open-heart surgeries on July 9, 1893, at Provident Hospital in Chicago. He operated on James Cornish, a man with a stab wound to the heart, successfully repairing the damage without modern medical technology. Cornish made a full recovery, and Williams’ achievement paved the way for advancements in heart surgery while breaking racial barriers in medicine. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of medical professionals.
2. Michaëlle Jean, born in Haiti, became Canada’s first Black Governor General (2005–2010).
