He operated on James Cornish, a man with a stab wound to the heart, successfully repairing the damage without modern medical technology. Cornish made a full recovery, and Williams’ achievement paved the way for advancements in heart surgery while breaking racial barriers in medicine. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of medical professionals.

Black History Month - Did You Know That

1.   Marie-Joseph Angélique was an enslaved Black woman in Montreal who was accused—without proof—of setting a massive fire in 1734. Known for resisting her enslavement, she had attempted to escape but was recaptured. When a fire destroyed much of Old Montreal, she was blamed despite no concrete evidence. After a biased trial and torture, she was forced to confess and was publicly executed on June 21, 1734. Her story is now seen as a symbol of resistance against slavery and racial injustice in Canada. She remains a significant figure in Black Canadian history, inspiring books, plays, and historical research.

2.   Sidney Poitier made history as the first Black actor to win Best Actor at the Oscars in 1964 for Lilies of the Field (1963). His win broke racial barriers in Hollywood, paving the way for future Black actors. In 2002, he received an honorary Academy Award for his lifetime achievements. His legacy remains one of excellence, dignity, and progress in film and civil rights.

Black History Month - Did You Know That?

1.   Canada was seen as a haven for Black people escaping slavery in the U.S. Especially through the underground railroad in the 19th century. Many settled in Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Quebec, forming early Black communities. Notable Black settlements included Buxton, Chatham, and Windsor (Ontario), Africville (Nova Scotia), and communities in Montreal (Quebec).

2.   Chloe Cooley – A Black woman in Ontario whose violent treatment by her enslaver led to early anti-slavery laws. Chloe Cooley was an enslaved Black woman in Upper Canada whose violent abduction and sale across the U.S. border in 1793 sparked early anti-slavery legislation. Her resistance was witnessed and reported to Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe, leading to the Act to Limit Slavery in Upper Canada—the first law restricting slavery in a British colony. Though it did not immediately free all enslaved people, it banned new enslaved individuals from being brought into Upper Canada and set the stage for abolition. Cooley’s bravery remains a key moment in Canada’s history of resistance against slavery.
