Assumption’s STEM program started back in 2012 and draws students from a variety of grades and backgrounds, all of whom are interested in careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. The rationale behind STEM is to provide the student body with opportunities to experience, learn and discover their passion for the physical world that surrounds them. STEM is also directly linked to the school’s AP (Advanced Placement) program, a program where university level curriculum is taught in a high school setting in hopes of allowing our graduates to enter a post secondary institution better prepared for the rigorous task ahead. Our group hosts speakers which have included Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, McMaster’s Head of Cardiology Dr. Devereaux, award winning Architect Kevin Stelzer, and Nuclear Engineer Bernie Fitzpatrick. To date the students have had the pleasure of meeting over sixty different experts in a variety of fields. Our STEM program has been involved in hosting many events including the 2020 Vision of the Future Conference (organized at the Sanderson Center for all Brantford schools), the Power of Ideas exhibit (by the Perimeter Institute and the Ontario Science Center as it travelled across Canada), and Evening of STEM where our students participated in hands on events. Students have travelled locally to visit a number of universities and scientific facilities, as well as internationally to Spain, Costa Rica and most recently Germany & Switzerland. If interested, please drop by room 3005 to pick up an application/permission form. They are due back by Friday Oct 1st. Everyone is welcomed to participate.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul needs our help. They are in desperate need of toiletry items. We will be running a toiletry drive from Monday, October 4th to Thursday, October 7th in your second period class. The following items are needed: bars of soap, body wash, shampoo, toothbrushes, toothpaste, razors, deodorant, toilet paper, Kleenex tissue paper, and hand soap. Thank you in advance for your support as we serve our community the way Christ has called us to.
