1.   Period 2 Exams were today and Period 3 & 4 exams will continue next week on Monday January 27th and Tuesday January 28th.

2.   Any student not returning to ACS for semester 2, you are encouraged to donate your uniform items to TLC. Make sure to see Mrs. Medeiros or Mrs. Bednarz to get a ballot for each item. You could win some fantastic prizes. The draw takes place at the end of semester 2. 

3.   The library will be closed on exam days and that means so will the cell phone locker. Please make alternate arrangements to charge your cell phone.  

4.   This is a friendly reminder for those who still have overdue library books. Please return them to the basketball dropbox located just inside the library doors as soon as possible. To receive your Semester 2 textbooks, ensure all overdue books are returned. If any books are lost or damaged, please pay for them in cash. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask a librarian. Let's work together to get those overdue books back where they belong!

1.   We want to thank Mr. Faieta for his continued commitment and contributions to ACS and wish him all the best at SJC in Sem. 2.  We will miss you Mr. Faieta, and we know you will always be a LIon at Heart.

6.   Valentine’s day is just around the corner! Starting the first day of semester two, buy your special someone a carnation and hersey’s chocolate for $3. Sales run Feb 3rd to Feb 11th at the back of the caf on all three lunches. Carnations will be delivered to period 4 classes on Valentine’s day.

10.  Happy Pongal, Lions!    The Ace Club is excited to share some insights about Pongal, a vibrant harvest festival celebrated in January by people of Tamil Nadu in South India, and Tamil communities worldwide!  Pongal marks the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of the Sun’s northward journey, symbolizing new beginnings, prosperity, and gratitude for nature’s blessings.  While Pongal has roots in Hindu traditions, it is also a cultural celebration embraced by people from diverse religious and cultural backgrounds. It’s a time to honor the Sun God, Surya, appreciate the hard work of farmers, and come together as a community to celebrate abundance and hope.   

11.  Today's special in the servery will be Cheeseburger and Fries combo topped with onions, pickles or tomatoes for $7.75.   Just a reminder that the servery will be closed during exams!

1.   The library will be closed on exam days and that means so will the cell phone locker. Please make alternate arrangements to charge your cell phone.  

2.   On January 23, 24, 27, and 28 the following buses will leave ACS at noon (12:00p.m.):   Routes: 18, 18A, B-725, B-730, B-733. Students that do not take one of these buses are encouraged to arrange a ride home on these days. 

3.   What could you have in common with Dr. Seuss, Weird Al Yankovic, Chevy Chase and Alicia Keys?  They were valedictorians for their graduating year. You could be the valedictorian for the class of 2025.  Application (found in Grad Info Package you received at the November meeting) and essay are due to the Main Office before 3 PM on Friday February 14th.  All other requirements are specified in that Grad package.   

4.   Attention Yearbook Club Members. There will NOT be a meeting today after school or through exams. We will start meetings again in Semester 2. Good luck on CCAs & Exams!

9.   Tuesday's special in the servery will be Comfort food for this cold weather.   Popcorn chicken mashed potato bowl topped with popcorn chicken, kernel corn, mozzarella cheese and gravy for $7.00.  Also available will be popcorn chicken poutine for $7.00.   Just a friendly reminder that the cafeteria servery will not be open during exams.

1.   Attention Graduates:  Your Parish Bursary Scholarship is due to Mrs. Fergus no later than the end of the school day today.  Unfortunately, she is absent today.  You can submit to the supply teacher Or to the Main Office.  The deadline does not change due to her unplanned absence.  

2.   Exciting news! The Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association is proud to sponsor the Young Authors Awards once again! We're celebrating outstanding student writing from K through 12 in both English and French. Students are invited to submit their best fiction, poetry, plays, and nonfiction (up to 3000 words). Winners will progress through school, local unit, and provincial levels, with provincial winners featured in an anthology! Please submit 2 clean copies of each entry to Mrs. Engell in the Library by Friday, February 7th. Happy writing, Lions!  

3.   LEAP and CWAYC are happy to provide, to all students, the information for the yearly Public Speaking Contest sponsored by the Royal Canadian Legion, Dundson Branch No. 461.  Check the LEAP D2L page for the rules, regulations and entry form. Rules/registration forms can also be found on the CWAYC bulletin board outside of Student Services. Two important deadlines:  Feb. 5th for the commitment to the contest and the contest itself on Feb. 19th. 

4.   Attention Prefects, thank-you for your servant leadership as you helped dozens and dozens of students through our Homework Help and Mentorship services, as well as your volunteerism when helping around the school and community through our Daily School Operations pillar.  To our students in need, thank-you for putting your faith and trust in us to help serve you.  And finally, to our staff and admin team, thank-you for your ongoing support to help us make a difference in so many lives throughout the semester.  On behalf of the ACS Prefect Program, we wish you all the best during final exams and we look forward to working alongside you next semester.

If you haven’t yet had a permission form signed and returned to Mrs. Charnish-Currie, you can grab one from outside Rm 1034, or scan the QR code on the flyers by the fountains around school. Bring comfortable clothes to wear, and a yoga mat if you have one. We will have a few extras.

Program (Youth Engagement Series) on Tuesdays from Jan 14 – Feb 11, 2025 at the downtown YMCA location from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. 7.   Le Club Français is hosting a French movie night, TOMORROW, Tuesday, January 14th in the Lecture Hall. The French film ‘THE CLIMB’ is a modern-day adventure comedy based on a true story. It tells the story of a young Senegalese- French man who sets out to climb Mount Everest to impress the woman he loves. Oh là là! The film will be viewed EN FRANÇAIS with English subtitles. Bring a friend, enjoy the show, and mangez du popcorn! Everyone is welcome to join!

10. ACS book club meeting is today. If you missed this morning’s meeting, we will have another one after school today at 3:05pm in the Library’s Innovation lab. Both meetings are the same. Hope to see you there!

4.   Today's special in the servery will be Buffalo Chicken Poutine topped with ranch Dressing and Green onions for $7.00.  Homemade Vegetarian French Onion Soup topped with freshly baked croutons and mozzarella cheese for $4.00. 

 

SPORTS:  

1.   The senior boy's basketball team ended their regular season with a win against NPC last night. Although it was a slow start, our lions came out in the 2nd half with determination. Shout outs go to the entire team who battled hard to secure the 67-63 win. Jaden and Temple played excellent defense. Andrew, Zag and Hilton took the lead in points. The boys are heading straight to the semifinals after the exam break. Great job!

1.   Attention all students! Updated Semester 2 schedules will be emailed out to all students on Wednesday Jan 29th. Please don’t come to guidance requesting schedules before this time as we are still updating rooms and teachers. Thanks for your understanding! 

2.   Attention College and University bound Students! OSAP opens in the spring once students have accepted their program offers and residence.  You can check out the OSAP calculator online to get an idea of how it works.  

3.   75 students indicated, when they registered for Graduation, that they were actively involved in their Parish.  Those parishes offer a bursary, that means money, to a worthy recipient.  But, in order to be considered, you must have completed the application.  The deadline was Monday, and Mrs. Fergus has received only 2 applications out of 75.  If you are an active participant in St. Joseph’s, St. Mary’s, or St. Patrick’s in Caledonia, the deadline has been extended until this coming Monday, January 20.  Find the bursary application on the Grade 12 D2L page, complete it and get the priest’s signature and submit to Mrs. Fergus by the end of the day, Monday January 20th. You gotta be in it to win it.  

4.   The Chess Club will be running today at 3:05 in Room 2023. All are welcome to attend. 

5.   Junior Band will have a short meeting today after school in the music room.  You will be picking up your music for second semester and we will discuss the audition process.  We are still looking for percussionists, so anyone with a piano background is encouraged to come out.

8.   Did you ever wonder what happened to Romeo Montague, as a young boy, to cause him to be the Romeo who falls so desperately in love with Juliet?  Well, if you want to know, you should ask Tara Patton to share her beautifully written original piece entitled “The Garden of Yearning” and congratulate her on being LEAP’s winner for the December contest entitled “The What Happened Story”.   

9.   The 180 Team is meeting tomorrow, Thursday, on all the lunchtimes in the chapel. New members are always welcome.  

10.  Stem council meeting Thursday afterschool room 3005.   We will be talking about a STUDENT RUN evening of stem for Second semester!!!

Bring a friend, enjoy the show, and mangez du popcorn! Everyone is welcome to join!

1.   Are you stressed about exams? Feel pulled in a million directions and not sure how to find some balance? Yoga may be for you! Yoga is a mindful and physical practice that can help you regulate your nervous system, improve your mobility and flexibility, and find calm. Join Mrs Charnish-Currie for 60 min of moving, breathing and calm in room 1034 Tuesdays after school. We will start next Tuesday and focus on grounding and centering strategies to help with exams. Flyers are posted by the water fountains around school- please sign up using the QR code on the flyer so we can choose the right space. Practice is open to students and staff, but students must have a signed permission form to participate! Forms will be emailed when you sign up, or are available in hard copy outside 1034.Attention swim team members. Spirit wear orders are now available on school cash online. Orders must be completed today by 3pm.  

2.   Jack Chapter’s 4th Annual Post-Christmas Karaoke Night is happening, and you’re invited to belt your heart out - or at least try....  TONIGHT, from 6–9 PM in the ACS cafeteria! For just $5, you get a night packed with karaoke, pizza, games, and prizes—basically everything your Friday night dreams are made of. But wait, there’s more! Simple Little Artsy will be selling handmade goodies, and the proceeds will go toward Jack Chapter initiatives. Tickets are cash only and will be sold at the back of the caf on all three lunches. No tickets will be sold at the door. Look for the commotion and the ticket-sellers channeling their inner Elvis, shouting, “Five bucks, one night, all shook up with fun!” The chapter is looking forward to seeing you there!

SPORTS:  

1.   The girls hockey team started 2025 off with 2 big wins. On Wednesday, the girls beat SJC 4-0. Carling Ruddell and Bri Spence scored 2 goals each. Victoria Sharp had 3 assists in the victory.  Kayli Sault had a solid game in net earning the shut out.  On Thursday, the girls travelled to Caledonia where they beat MPSS 5-2. Lena Powless lead the way with 2 goals, and Indie Warren, Carling Ruddell and Bri Spence each had one.  Alexis Greek had a strong game in net. Great start to the new year girls! 

2.   Yesterday, our boy's hockey team also started off the year with a 7-3 win over North Park. Lorenzo Touri made his long-awaited debut in high school hockey and scored late in the third period. Rookies Cameron Bednarz and Seamus Pierce also scored in the third to secure the victory. Colten Curtin scored two nice goals but was unable to complete the hat trick. Next week, our boys face Holy Trinity for a chance to secure top spot in the league.
